The Southern Christian Leadership Conference was founded in 1957. The club really expanded after the Montgomery Bus Boycott ended. Martin Luther King Jr. led SCLC along with other founders Ralph Abernathy, Fred Shuttlesworth, Bayard Rustin, and more black ministers. The SCLC fought for civil rights through peaceful protest to appeal to the softness and good conscience of white citizens to end discrimination. They focus on the March on Washington for Jobs of Freedom, the desegregation of Birmingham, Alabama; and many sit-ins and voter registration("Southern Christian Leadership Conference",1).
The SCLC was formally known as the Southern Negro Leaders Conference on Transportation and Non-violent Integration. They decided to change their name and take the word "Negro" out of it so it made it harder for white people to stand against them. Founders believed that the communities in southern America had outstanding leadership and skills, the SCLC was a coordinator for locally led activism ("Southern Christian Leadership Conference",1).
The SCLC continued its successes they brought over 25,000 people to Washington, D.C. for the 1957 Prayer Pilgrimage. Also1957, they marched with 40,000 young activists in Albany, Georgia. In 1961, SCLC demonstrations failed and they did not get nation wide coverage. In Birmingham in 1963, the SCLC pushed protests until the commissioner, Eugene Connor, sicked dogs on protesters. He also had authorities use high-pressure hoses against black citizens and even young children. This was all caught on television and infuriated the country. After Kennedy's assassination, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ("Southern Christian Leadership Conference", 2).
