Martin Luther King Jr helped lead African-Americans to achieve full and equal rights as white men do in the United States. He believed in peaceful protest and advocated for non-violence ("Martin Luther King Jr.",1). One of King's major inspirations was Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi had fought against the British rulers in India,he also believed in peaceful protest. Gandhi led millions of people in peaceful protests across India. King realized that blacks in the South could also use this tactic to fight segregation (Claybourne, 11).

The Montgomery Bus Boycott was the first major event that set African-American civil rights in motion, and fueled MLK's fire to lead his people in that journey. It all started on December 1, 1955 when an African-American woman, Rosa Parks, got arrested because she would not move to the back of the bus when a white person asked for her seat. All African- Americans joined together and decided to boycott against the bus system. The bus boycott lasted 400 days, December 5,1955 all the way to December 21,1956 ("Montgomery Bus Boycott, 1). African-Americans made up 80% of the bus systems profit. So after a year and almost going bankrupt, Montgomery Buses decided to integrate ( "Montgomery Bus Boycott",1).
